South City Brunch

If you like french toast, we recently checked out Sunday Brunch at South City Grill. Everyone gets a complimentary Bellini, Mimosa or Champagne! If the photo didn’t make you drool – here is the description of the french toast:

Almond Crusted Brioche French Toast / Amaretto Whipped Cream / Fresh
Berries / Blueberry Maple Syrup

Diner Beware: They add a suggested 18% gratuity to all bills no matter what the size (we were just two). If you charge with your credit card you will then get the credit slip with a BLANK tip line which can be very misleading!

Brownstone Diner on Food Network

It’s a late post but since we had a pow-wow breakfast meeting at Brownstone Diner this morning figured I’d post in case no one saw it. It was featured in Spring 2008 on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives” with Guy Fieri.

NY Times Review: Hudson Tavern

GOOD

THE SPACE Updated working-class tavern: hexagonal-tiled floors, dark-wood paneling, a mahogany bar with mirrors and stained glass. Three dining rooms with about 130 seats, as well as outdoor tables in the summer. A restroom and most tables are wheelchair-accessible.

THE CROWD Updated working-class Hoboken: professional, casually dressed singles, couples and families.

THE STAFF Friendly and efficient.

THE BAR As noted above; not too noisy, even when full. The wine and beer lists are sophisticated and reasonably priced.

THE BILL Brunch entrees, $8 to $12. Dinner entrees, $14 to $29. Credit cards: American Express, MasterCard and Visa.

WHAT WE LIKE Crab cake, calamari, cheese plate; rib-eye steak, rack of lamb, lobster ravioli.

IF YOU GO Open daily. Dinner: Sunday to Wednesday, 5 to 10 p.m.; Thursday, 5 to 11 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 5 p.m. to midnight. Brunch: Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Reservations recommended. On-street parking is very limited; the restaurant offers three hours of validated free parking at Little Man Parking, 12th and Hudson Streets.

NY Times Review: Ox

EXCELLENT

THE SPACE A deceptively ambitious restaurant in a modest neighborhood setting. Fully wheelchair accessible.

THE CROWD Hip urban professionals.

THE STAFF Young and equally hip, but unencumbered by attitude.

THE BAR A large and companionable space that spills over onto two communal tables at the rear of the restaurant. Short, well-chosen wine list, with intriguing bottles in the $20s and $30s (and by the glass).

THE BILL Brunch entrees, $6 to $16. Dinner entrees, $14 to $23. All major credit cards accepted.

WHAT WE LIKE Oxtail, white bean salad, Tuscan kale-and-ricotta pie, tomato soup, steamed mussels; poached sea bass, miso-glazed monkfish, cornmeal-crusted skate, grilled flat-iron steak, roasted guinea hen; chocolate torte, mango-anise crème brûlée, chestnut crepes, apple-almond tart.

IF YOU GO Closed Monday. Dinner: Tuesday to Saturday, 5:30 to 11 p.m.; Sunday, 5:30 to 10 p.m. Brunch: Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Reservations recommended (necessary on weekends). The restaurant is on a rather scruffy block 200 yards west of the Grove Street PATH station; metered parking is available on the street and in a municipal lot next door.
